Springtrap is one of the most recognizable characters from Five Nights at Freddy's, and the key to the look is texture. The character is meant to read as a deteriorating animatronic suit, not a clean plastic prop. After printing and sanding the base in PLA, I dyed craft felt to a specific musty, aged yellow, close to the color of old foam or yellowed fabric, then hand-cut it and wrapped it around the helmet to replicate the worn surface of the suit.
The jaw was the other challenge. Rather than leaving it static, I designed a mechanism using elastic bands that holds the jaw in its natural resting position and allows it to move with the wearer. The elastic provides just enough return tension that the jaw snaps back into place on its own. The combination of the fabric wrapping and the working jaw gives the helmet a tactile, character-accurate quality that a straight painted print would not.
